WHAT IS SCHEME OF WORK?
The scheme of work is the amount of coverage teacher plan to teach in one term/one year of the subject based on the syllabus. It is a series of topics picked from the syllabus and arranged logically to suit the teaching strategy of a teacher. It guides the teacher in planning the unit of instruction and consequently the daily lessons in line with the time available.
A well prepared scheme of work gives an overview of the total course content, provide a sequential list of learning tasks, provide a basis for long range planning, teaching and evaluation. The scheme of work is the general level of instructional plans.
Structure of the New TIE Scheme of Work Template
I. Preliminary Information (Header)
Before the table, you must include:
- School Name – This is the official name of the school where teaching takes place.
- Teacher’s Name – This is the full name of the teacher preparing the scheme of work.
- Subject – This shows the subject being taught.
- Class – This indicates the level of learners.
- Term – This shows the school term when the content will be taught.
- Year – This is the academic year.

II. Main Table (12 Components / Columns)
The new format has 12 important columns:
- Main Competence – General skill learners should develop
- Specific Competences – Detailed abilities under the main competence
- Learning Activities – General activities from the syllabus
- Specific Activities – Teacher-designed activities for learners
- Month – When the topic will be taught
- Week – Specific week of teaching
- Number of Periods – Lessons allocated
- Teaching & Learning Methods – Strategies used (discussion, group work, etc.)
- Teaching & Learning Resources – Materials (books, charts, ICT, etc.)
- Assessment Tools – How learning is measured (tests, quizzes, observation)
- References – Books or sources used
- Remarks – Comments on progress or challenges

IMPORTANCE OF SCHEME OF WORK
- To plan teaching for a term or a year.
- To present topics in a logical, presentable sequence/order.
- To remind teacher the amount of teaching load and materials ahead.
